The Mediterranean Diet?

So what exactly is all this fuss about the Mediterranean Diet? Everywhere you go, the topic comes up in discussions as the solution to all our weight problems. The name itself conjures up associations of lazy summer holidays, sumptuous food, wine and good friends. How can a diet like this not be extremely enjoyable?

In a recent study the Mediterranean type diet was compared head on to Low-Carb and Low-Fat type diets. It came out with flying colors. Average weight loss on the Mediterranean diet almost equaled that of Low-Carb diets, while most definitely offering a more varied and exciting menu. Most importantly; the range of implementation options and food groups this eating plan offers makes it much easier to permanently change to your everyday eating habits for sustained weight loss.

The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine (17 July 2008), found that participants in the Low-Carb group lost the most weight with a two year sustained average loss of 10.4 lb (4.7 kg). The group on the Mediterranean diet followed close on their heels with an average weight loss of 9.7 lb (4.4 kg). Interestingly, the average weight loss of those on the Low-Fat Diet was considerably lower at only 6.4 lb (2.9 kg). Women did better than men on the Mediterranean Diet, and the diet was also found to have definite general health benefits such as the prevention of Type II Diabetes and heart problems, as well as improved longevity.

Now that we know the Mediterranean diet warrants a closer look; what is it exactly?

How to choose the best diet

You’ve reached the point where you decided that you have had enough of not being able to enjoy your life as much as you should because of the “excess baggage” you are carrying around. The question then, with so many diets out there, is “How do I go about choosing the right diet for me?”  The eventual answer to that question will be worth millions, and truth be told, there will probably be as many answers as there are people, because we are all so different. Some of the considerations for choosing a diet are your lifestyle, your personality, your genetic make-up and your community. What follows is a list of some of the more important aspects to consider.

1. Does your diet suit your lifestyle? If you are working full day at an office, you simply do not have the time to go and search for exotic ingredients some of the celebrity diets require. Or you may not have much time available to spend in the kitchen weighing off portions or preparing food. Some of the diets may not fit your budget, while others can be easily accommodated. Do you have the time and the opportunity to attend required weigh in sessions? Make sure that whichever diet you choose, it is practical and easy to execute taking into account your lifestyle.

2. Avoid strict diets. Instead of going on a very strict diet, choose a diet that considers a healthy lifestyle and teaches you how to enjoy healthy, nutritious and appetizing food. One of the most important success factors for your diet is your mindset, so it is essential that your diet trigger positive associations in your mind. In short, you have to enjoy it. Often, when the diet is very strict, and you have made a mistake, it is very easy to feel like a complete failure and abandon the diet in its entirety. Choose a diet that allows you sufficient freedom of choice with regards to food types and regularity of meals to still enjoy your life, and that helps you to get back on track should you have made a mistake.

General tips on nutrition

1. Drink plenty of water. It is very important to drink 8-10 glasses of water every day, whether you are trying to lose weight or not. Water is required by all of the systems in your body to function correctly. If you are dehydrated, your body will try to protect you in all sorts of ways, including retaining as much water as it can. Without water, therefore, your body can also not get rid of the excess fat and toxins while you are trying to lose weight. There are many more reasons for developing a love for water, which we will discuss as a topic all by itself. For know, also keep in mind that your body often confuses hunger with thirst. By making sure that you are properly hydrated, you will be in a better position to control your food portions!

2. Try new types of water. Most people don’t like the idea of drinking 8-10 glasses of plain water each day. Try different types. Maybe you like sparkling waters better. Maybe club soda or even different flavoured waters to add some variety. Just be careful to check the energy contents of the drinks.

3. Be careful of white foods. In general, white foods are best avoided when you want to lose weight. This includes white bread, white rice, white pasta, white sugar and even white fruits. Rather find healthier substitutions that contain whole grains and lots of extra vitamins and minerals. Not only will it look more appetizing, but it will also taste better.

The easy way to get more active

1. Increase your general activity level. If you seriously want to lose weight, you need to understand that getting enough exercise is as important as changing your eating habits. While it is not necessary to start running marathons, it is very important to raise your general activity level. Be conscious of your activity levels and ensure that you are consciously focusing on becoming a more active person. Not only will it help you lose weight, but it will also help you to keep the weight you lost from coming back.

2. Gradually become more active during the day. Any additional movement you introduce habitually in your life can make a big difference. Maybe you can try putting on some music and start dancing while you clean your house. Park your car a bit further from your destination and walk from there to the office, store or wherever you need to go. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Simple changes such as these can make a massive difference at the end of a month!

More general diet and weight loss tips

1. Your goal should be to be healthy, not thin. Never get so obsessed with losing weight that it affects your health of your quality of life. Work on a sustainable plan for healthy living and start enjoying your life!

2. Balance your energy requirements and your intake. It is important for you to develop a healthy balance between the numbers of calories / kilojoules (energy) that you consume each day and the energy your body needs to sustain your current lifestyle. The better the balance, the healthier you will be. Increasing exercise and eating smaller portions of healthy food will also help your body to use up the consumed energy more effectively, and convert some of the stored fat into energy. The end result…you lose weight at a faster rate.

3. Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. Charts and web-sites often suggest your ideal weight based on height alone, and do not take into account muscle mass. Never risk losing muscle to attain your target weight. When you feel healthy and comfortable with yourself, stop trying to lose and switch to maintenance mode.

Top 10 Weight Loss Tips

1. Be realistic. Not meeting your own expectations is the fastest way to fail at weight loss. You should plan to lose no more than and average of 1-2 pounds or half a kilo to 1 kilo per week. Reaching realistic targets will give you a sense of achievement.

2. Never give up. The target weight loss per week you have set yourself is an average. in real life you may lose nothing for two weeks and the 2 or 3 pounds the next week! Present your weight loss to yourself in a graph, and just keep going. Do not be discouraged by periods where your body appears to not be reacting. It is just gearing itself up for the next big loss.

3. Get support. It is much easier to lose weight when you have a good support structure. Surround yourself with friends and family who will encourage you through the process. Be careful about telling those people who might be discouraging, either by not believing in you or by reminding you about your diet every time they see you eat.

Hoodia Gordonii report

According to CBS (Correspondent Lesley Stahl – November 2004) people spend more than $40 billion each year on products designed to help them lose weight. Many of these products did not live up to expectations, but a lot of research is underway into solutions for this ever present problem. By all accounts Hoodia Gordonii may finally be the answer.

Hoodia is a natural substance that reduces your appetite. It functions differently from other appetite suppressants and diet stimulants such as Ephedra and Phenfen, that are now banned because of the dangerous side effects. Hoodia doesn’t stimulate at all. Scientists say it fools the brain by making you think you’re full, even if you’ve eaten very little.

Studies showed the diet of the South African bushmen (the San people), legendary for their ability to survive in a very barren environment with very little food available, naturally contains hoodia as a key ingredient since the beginning of human memory. The natural habitat of the bushmen is the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, which also happens to be the only place in the world where hoodia grows wild.

Nigel Crawhall, a linguist and interpreter, hired an experienced tracker named Toppies Kruiper, a local aboriginal Bushman, to help find hoodia. While Kruiper led the 60 Minutes crew out into the desert, Lesley Stahl asked him if he ate hoodia. “I really like to eat them when the new rains have come,” says Kruiper, speaking through the interpreter. “Then they’re really quite delicious.”

When the team located the plant, Kruiper cut off a piece that looked like a small spiky pickle, and proceeded to remove the sharp spines. In the interest of science, Stahl ate it. She described the taste as cucumber-like in texture, but not bad.”
