FDA Warns Against Three More Weight Loss Pills

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) is always busy evaluating and testing weight loss products in an ongoing battle to clear the store shelves and on-line stores of dangerous diet pills and weight loss supplements. On 22 December 2008, the FDA issued a press release containing 28 weight loss products to avoid. On the 8th of January 2009, the FDA expanded the list of tainted weight loss products to include 41 more dangerous weight loss pills. The last update to this list (now containing 72 products) was done on March 20, 2009 via press release. The FDA will continue to update this list on an ongoing basis.

New products are launched into this largely unregulated market on a daily basis, and it is obvious that there is no way the FDA will ever be able to test all the weight loss products on offer. This does not mean all diet pills commercially available are unsafe and / or ineffective. On the contrary, many of them can actually help you lose weight faster, but…..it is of the utmost importance that you make informed decisions when deciding to try new weight loss products. It is absolutely crucial to take responsibility for looking after your own health, so do not rely solely on FDA warning lists and double check promises made by vendors online. The only way to make informed decisions about weight loss pills is to understand which ingredients are contained in products you consider using, and then to explore the potential impact of these ingredients on your health.

Do your research on your next weight loss product thoroughly making use of the internet and any other sources of information you may have access too, for example your local pharmacist. With the overload of information available on the internet it is not always so easy to distinguish between good and bad advice, so choose a few websites (avoid those selling one product or product range) you can trust to help you make sense of the information out there. And get a second opinion every now and then just to make sure these sites are still trustworthy. If you are unable to find the necessary information, put in a request to one of your favorite sites to investigate the product for you, or choose something else that you can find information on.

hCG Diet, Simeons Diet and Kevin Trudeau’s Weight Loss Cure: the same dangerous diet

“I’ve heard you can lose 3 pounds a day on the hCG Diet, and that it redistributes fat from your waist, hips and thighs to leave you with a better shaped body without the need for exercise. That is a loss of 21 pounds a week? Does it really work that well and how safe is this weight loss plan?” I get asked regularly. Honestly? This is probably one of the worst diets ever to have seen the light of day. The hCG Diet is really a very unhealthy fad diet to follow and the way this diet is designed leaves the field wide open for scam artists and unscrupulous vendors to take advantage of so many people battling obesity.

First things first, let’s understand how this diet is supposed to work. On the hCG Diet you are required to to restrict your food intake to 500-800 calories per day, which is dangerously low if you keep in mind that diets allowing for 1200 calories per day are already considered to be very low calorie diets. While on this diet you will receive daily injections of hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin), or you will take hCG in oral form. hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy; initially by the developing embryo and later on by a part of the placenta. It is believed hCG plays a role in programming the hypothalamus to protect lean muscle and mobilize the use of stored body fat for energy. hCG is manufactured using extracts from the urine of pregnant women.

In theory, hCG results in the release of 1000 to 1500 calories of energy from fat tissue in your body, meaning you won’t feel hungry and should have lots of energy even though you are on a super low calorie diet. It should be rather obvious that if you restrict yourself to 500-800 calories per day; it doesn’t matter what you inject with — you’re going to lose weight. This “miracle cure for weight loss” is nothing else but a starvation diet, so along with the fat you will lose lean muscle mass and water weight. All starvation diets end up slowing down your metabolism, making it more difficult for you to reach and maintain your goal weight in the longer term. The hCG Diet or Kevin Trudeau’s Weight Loss Cure is no different.

Meal Replacement: a good strategy to lose weight

Meal replacement is a weight loss strategy that is fast regaining lost ground following recent clinical trials, and it is certainly one deserving of a second chance. Meal replacements can take the form of diet shakes, bars and other pre-packaged foods. These products are formulated to replace a meal and should contain all the necessary nutrients your body needs to keep going. The recommended way of using meal replacements is referred to as “partial meal replacement”, where only one or two meals are actually replaced every day.

Weight loss should, in theory, be rather easy. Your body needs a basic supply of energy to keep it going; influenced by a number of factors including your sex, height, weight, age and activity levels. If you then consistently take in fewer calories than required; your body will use stored fat to compensate for the deficit and you should lose weight. The average woman needs about 1800-2200 calories per day, while the average man requires about 2000-2500 calories per day. Your individually calculated daily energy requirement is referred to as your TER, or Total Energy Requirement.

If you reduce your daily calorie intake to a level of about 500 calories less than your daily requirement, you will lose approximately a pound per week. This is a healthy weight loss rate that will not damage your health or your metabolism. So, to lose weight you must find a way to consistently limit the number of calories you consume every day. The majority of people find it very difficult to limit their food portions, and really battle to refrain from overeating when confronted with some of their favorite foods.

The main reason for the success of meal replacement programs is that it offers dieters an easy and convenient way to manage their calorie intake. Since a single serving replace a meal, it automatically restricts calorie intake and enforces portion control. Usually the meal replacement program will also result in reduced temptation, since you will not come in contact with the foods that may normally act as a trigger for you to overeat. Dieters also often find it difficult to stick to their diets when they are traveling or when they do not have the time and energy to cook. When you use meal replacements, these problems are solved.

Jillian Michaels: Does your metabolism prevent you from losing weight?

Most of us have had occasion to cast an envious look towards the skinny body of a colleague or friend that seems to be able to eat just about anything without any visible consequences. “Great metabolism.” we say, as if we know exactly what we are talking about. Open a magazine, watch TV, and surf the internet and you are confronted with hundreds of products claiming to know the secret to boosting your metabolism. Scientists have made huge progress in understanding how the human body works to nourish and protect itself, but they still have a long way to go for full understanding of this thing we call a metabolism. Still, we can benefit a lot from what they know already, and that is exactly where Jillian Michaels’ latest book, “Master Your Metabolism”, comes in. She explains the latest scientific research about the human metabolism in lay terms that everyone can understand.

Many of you will know Jillian Michaels as the stunning personal trainer star of “The Biggest Loser”; the competitive weight-loss reality TV show that is seen by nearly 15 million viewers every week of the season. “What does Jillian Michaels know about endocrinology?” I have heard said. Well, based on the information contained in this book, a fair bit. Sometimes a lay person can offer a much better or simpler explanation of very technical concepts than a scientist can. Medical professionals often complicate matters endlessly, precisely because of their in-depth understanding of the subject matter. In their eagerness to ensure factual correctness, they find it almost impossible not to give us an information overload. What we really need is just the basic information on how the metabolism works, what it is affected by, and directions for how we can use this knowledge to get those bodies we always wanted.

The Acai Berry Weight Loss Scam

Is the acai berry weight loss craze a scam; just another fad diet? Yes, of course! Crazy claims of huge weight loss in a matter of weeks, all just by incorporating acai berries into your diet? Increased energy levels, improved digestion, improved sleep, younger skin – you name it, the acai berry magically delivers it. No scientific study or report remotely supports any claims made with regards to the weight loss magic offered by the acai berry. Why all the fuss then?

Well, for starters, it is far easier to get the public to believe an exotic berry out of the rain forests of Brazil offers the magic cure for obesity than it would be to convince consumers they will magically lose weight eating blueberries, grapes, apple or banana. While the acai berry offers many other health benefits, it will be no more effective in helping you lose weight than any other fruit.

The acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) berry is just another fruit after all. The berries are harvested in the Brazilian rain forest from acai palms that may reach heights in excess of 60 feet – one of the same palms used to harvest edible hearts of palm. Acai is naturally lower in sugar, with the flavor described as something between berries and chocolate. This berry is commonly used in juices, beverages, smoothies, frozen treats and dietary supplements.
