Are You Eating Enough?

Author: Sonia Devine

In order to lose weight, we have to eat less of the wrong types of foods, watch our portion sizes and exercise more. That makes sense, right? There is no getting around the fact that if you want to shed kilos you must be expending more energy than you take in. But is there such a thing as going to extremes? In some cases, yes. Some people eat very little yet are still overweight and (understandably) very unhappy about it!

This is exactly what was happening with my client ‘Gina’, who initially came to me because she was struggling to cope with life. She had very low self esteem, and was often reduced to tears due to the high level of stress she was under. To top it all off, ‘Gina’ was also suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which caused her to experience severe and frequent panic attacks. Even though she was overweight, she was not in the right frame of mind to do anything about it at that point in time. We agreed to work on the more pressing issues first and address her weight later on.

As she progressed with the therapy, ‘Gina’ became emotionally much stronger and after some time, she decided it was time to lose weight. I asked ‘Gina’ to tell me about her current diet. As I listened and took notes, I was shocked to discover that despite being several kilos overweight, ‘Gina’ actually ate very little, and often skipped meals. She rarely ate until lunchtime; most days she would eat half a sandwich, sometimes a whole sandwich if she wasn’t feeling too anxious. Dinner was a handful of pasta and some kind of sauce. That was it! Continue reading ‘Are You Eating Enough?’

What are the Dangers and Problems of Rapid Weight Loss

Author: Donovan Baldwin

People searching for weight loss programs and diets today seem to be searching more for rapid weight loss than permanent, healthy weight loss. Unfortunately, it is a fact that quick diet weight loss programs are seldom without their dangers, and their results usually range from erratic to nonexistent.

I would advise anyone seeking to lose weight to substitute the term ‘healthy weight loss program’ for ‘rapid weight loss program’. I hope, the following short discussion will explain my position to some extent.

You, like so many others in today’s society, are concerned about losing weight. Like so many others, you are looking for some sort of rapid weight loss program or plan. Rapid weight loss, also often referred to as quick weight loss or fast weight loss, involves, as its name implies, losing weight in a short period of time. Claims of such programs often cite fantastic results in anywhere from two to seven days.

In the United States, approximately two-thirds of the adult population is overweight or obese, and hundreds of thousands of these Americans are understandably interested in rapidly losing that unwanted weight. Many simply wish to lose weight before an important event, like an upcoming vacation or a wedding, while others are willing to accept the fact that permanent, healthy weight loss is a lifetime commitment. How to Use Aromatherapy for Weight Loss

Crazy Fit Weight Loss Vibration Massage Plate

Author: Kyley Zimmerman

Over the years, people have doubted the effectiveness of aromatherapy for weight loss. More recently, though, scientists have studied the relationship between weight loss and the sense of smell. And they’ve reached some interesting conclusions.

So… Can you use aromatherapy for weight loss? The short answer is “Yes”.

This is not to say that aromatherapy is a “magic bullet” or instant weight loss cure – there is no such thing. But aromatherapy can be a valuable part of a healthy, sensible weight loss program.

Aromatherapy does two things: It can help manage cravings and feelings of hunger, and it can also address some contributors to weight issues such as stress, anxiety and depression.

Book Review: The APO E Gene Diet by Pamela McDonald

By Simon Barrett
I am not really much of a diet fan, my weight has never been an issue, I have been a 148lbs dripping wet for the past 35 years. I eat whatever I want, when I want. But as Pamela McDonald explains diet is not merely a method for controlling weight, but has a significant influence on health and quality of life. The world is full of fad diets, most of which make me cringe. I am sure it cannot be so, but I seems to me that a popular one preaches the virtues of meats and fats, while certainly meat and fat are important aspects of nutrition, I can hardly imagine that living on fried bacon would be a good way to lose weight and promote good overall health. Likewise a steady diet of cabbage soup would likely become somewhat monotonous after a couple of days.

Pamela McDonald takes a different approach, there is no one size fits all diet, different people need different things. Although all humans are intrinsically composed of the same material, the building blocks, our genes, are subtlety different. In decoding our DNA researchers in recent years have found small inconsistencies in people’s DNA that make them more susceptible to specific health conditions.

The Structure House Weight Loss Plan.

It isn’t food that makes us fat, but our relationship with food. We develop and hone this relationship throughout our lives, starting from when we are babies. Not only does food satisfy our nutritional needs, but it also plays a vital part in satisfying a whole range of emotional needs. Food is such an integral part of our daily existence that it is difficult to even envisage some events without food; celebrating something or needing consolation, meeting up with family and friends or even going on holiday. The list just goes on and on. According to the Structure House philosophy everyone develops a set of expectations, habits, associations, and states of mind related to food. The sum total of these, influenced by our family dynamics, our cultural backgrounds, our individual attitudes and our tastes, is regarded by Structure House as our “relationship” with food.

Gerard J. Musante, Ph.D, one of the America’s leading experts on obesity and weight loss, is a clinical psychologist and a Clinical Fellow in the Behavior Therapy and Research Society. He served on the faculty of Duke University Medical Center, where he pioneered the behavior change approach to weight loss, and currently maintains his association with Duke University in the capacity of Consulting Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Structure House, one of the few resident weight loss programs in the United States, was founded by Dr Musante in 1977. Dr Musante drew on his experience of over thirty years in helping thousands achieve lasting weight loss to write his book, “The Structure House Weight Loss Plan.” This book aims to provide readers with all the information and insights they would have gained had they attended the resident program at Structure House.

How Can Counselling Help You Shed The Pounds?

Author : Victoria Cochrane

Counselling – look it up in the dictionary and the definition is related to offering professional help or advice. It might conjure up images of Woody Allen lying on a psychiatrist’s couch for the best part of 30 years, but in reality it can be far more accessible and quick to work.

Good counselling is available in many forms and can help you to deal with the problems that life can throw at you – used alongside a good weight-loss plan, it can be the key to overcoming yo-yo dieting. Oprah Winfrey’s weight gain confession 2009

Whether you’re a fan of Oprah Winfrey or not, you have to respect her for how far she’s come. From very humble beginnings she has grown to be one of the most influential people in the world today.  An Oprah show in 1996 on mad cow disease was followed by years of bitter legal wrangling between Oprah and a group of Texas cattlemen, after they sued her for “making false and disparaging statements about perishable food products”. The cattlemen claimed that one of her remarks: “It has just stopped me cold from eating another burger!”, resulted in a major drop in cattle prices – costing them more than $12 million. A jury eventually found Oprah not liable for damages. This little story very neatly demonstrates the power of Oprah Winfrey.

One of the reasons so many people from around the world holds Oprah so dearly is her honesty.  She opens her life and her struggles to her audience, which makes it almost impossible not to identify with Oprah for one reason or the other.  In the end, of course, we are all just human beings. Oprah’s ups and downs with weight gain are probably her most widely publicized and self confessed problem area, a battle many of us can identify with. Too many of our efforts followed exactly the same route: lose, gain back plus, lose again, gain back plus and so on. And every time it is just more difficult to get back on the bandwagon. Review of the South Beach Diet

The South Beach diet was developed by a practicing cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatston. Dr Agatston did not initially set out to develop a weight-loss plan. He simply got frustrated when his patients, when following the standard, low-fat American Heart Association diet, failed to lose weight or improve their blood chemistry. He then developed a new diet specifically for his patients, which later became the basis for The South Beach Diet, an international best seller. The South Beach Diet was first published in April 2003 and has been on the New York Times best seller list for more than 96 consecutive weeks, with more than 8.5 million copies in print. It was #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list for 38 weeks.

The diet is formulated on the premise that many of us are addicted to carbohydrate foods. Many experts commented that the South Beach diet is really just a revised version of the Atkins Diet. Both of these diets kick off with a first stage designed to get rid of addiction to high levels of carbohydrate consumption. The South Beach diet varies from Atkins in that it consists of three instead of four phases. While the first and last phases of both diets are very similar, the middle two phases of the Atkins Diet has been replaced by a single stage in the South Beach Diet. As result of this difference the typical rate at which South Beach followers lose weight is lower than that of Atkins followers, but fans claim that the South Beach diet is easier to stick to since it offers greater variety at an earlier stage in the diet.

The South Beach Diet is introduced as a balanced weight-loss and maintenance plan that encourages people to eat a variety of foods, such as lean sources of protein, reduced fat cheeses and dairy products, legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and good fats like olive and canola oil.  Snacking is encouraged along with approved sweet treats and desserts on a daily basis. The glycemic index (is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their effect on blood sugar) plays a critical role in the diet, as it forms the basis for Agatston’s advice on how to choose the best carbohydrates to accompany a meal. The concept of the glycemic index (considered with the actual glycemic load) is generally accepted as a crucial component of healthy diets nowadays.

Review of the Perricone Diet

Dr Nicolas Perricone M.D. is probably best known for his guest appearances on television shows such as Oprah, CNN, the Today Show, and Larry King. He is a respected physician, a research scientist, and a trusted expert on health and beauty. In addition, he is also the author of three New York Times # 1 Best Sellers, “The Perricone Promise” (Warner Books 2004), “The Perricone Prescription” (HarperCollins 2002), as well as the New York Times best seller, “The Perricone Weight Loss Diet” (Random House 2005).

Perricone achieved tremendous success with his book “The Perricone Promise”, which really tapped into one of mankind’s most basic fears, that of getting old. Many customers reported that they looked and felt younger following Dr Perricone’s diet, and that it delivered an added bonus…they lost weight! Dr Perricone subsequently expanded his portfolio of programs with his anti-inflammatory weight loss program that promises to accelerate fat loss by increasing the metabolism and building and maintaining muscle mass, while at the same time making you look younger and live longer.

In his books he explains to his readers how to lose weight, rebuild muscle mass, while avoiding the haggard, aging, and drawn appearance that typically results from many of the other weight-loss programs. “Treat yourself well and the weight will come off,” he suggests. As an added bonus, Dr. Perricone’s program will help you sleep better; you will have more energy and less stress, and experience greater mental clarity. Lose the weight, the wrinkles, and the years! He goes on to promise dramatic results in as little as 14 days.
