Neera Super Cleanse – lose weight with this Lemon Detox Diet fast but consider the cost

We know all about fashion cycles. So it is no surprise that an old and out-of-date weight loss program can make a comeback as easily as did the mini, and just as many times too! Someone delves into the archives, discovers an old diet they can put a new spin on; and before you know it, you have the latest “in” diet. The origins on a diet can provide valuable clues as to how good the program is likely to be for you from a general health perspective. The Neera Super Cleanse Diet is originally derived from the Master Cleanse system, a detox program created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. In other regions of the world this diet is referred to as the Lemon Detox Diet. Since these two diets are almost identical; what is discussed for one, also goes for the other. A deeper look into the background of Burroughs and his Master Cleanse system really makes you think twice about this so-called wonder diet.

Stanley Burroughs began his alternative health practices in the Portland area in the 1940s. Some of his areas of expertise included detoxification, colored light therapy and deep reflexology. Burroughs got into trouble with the law when a cancer patient, whom Burroughs was convinced he can cure, died following treatment by Burroughs. The patient was subjected to a number of treatments including plenty of Burroughs’ special lemonade, colored light therapy and deep abdominal massages. An autopsy later found that this patient died as result of massive internal bleeding in the abdomen. While a second degree murder conviction was eventually overturned by the California Supreme Court, it noted that Burroughs was susceptible to a possible conviction of involuntary manslaughter, as evidence strongly suggested death occurred as result of the repeated massages the deceased received from Burroughs. In 1960 Burroughs was also convicted of practicing medicine without a license.

The special lemonade used by Burroughs as part of his Master Cleanse program forms the basis of today’s lemon based detox diets, including the Neera Super Cleanse diet. The star of the show on this weight loss program is the special detox lemonade, also referred to as the Neera Drink. The Neera Drink is mixed using Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup (a mixture of palm and maple syrup), lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Advertisements for the Neera Super Cleanse claim that you can lose 14 pounds plus in a single week, restore your alkalinity levels, rid your body of accumulated toxins and improve you energy levels. It is also suggested that following this detox program can cure you of a number of health conditions; including headaches, depression, heart conditions, cancers, and many others. Another magic potion that promises a cure for obesity and many other diseases – sound the fad diet alarm. But, before we jump to conclusions, let’s take a more in depth look at the diet.

While on the Neera Super Cleanse Diet, you will substitute all solid food with the Neera Drink or lemon detox drink. In theory, your body can then focus on cleansing and eliminating toxins from your system instead of having to expend energy to digest solid food. A laxative tea (Senna) is taken at night. The program is quite flexible with regards to duration. For beginners a 5 day plan is recommended, for which the 1- litre can of Madal Bal Syrup should be just enough. Those more experienced in detoxification can stay on the detox program for 10 or even 15 days, but no longer than 15 days. Following the 10 day program is recommended as it will reportedly allow you to cleanse the deeper tissues of the body. Distributors claim that maximum results can be achieved by sticking to the program for 15 days, as many people reported significant “health breakthroughs” by staying on it for longer than 10 days.

The Neera Super Cleanse program also offers a number of alternative versions that developed during the 1980s to suit different lifestyles. The “Relaxed” version of the cleansing program allows you to lengthen your natural nightly cleansing process (from dinner to breakfast) by substituting breakfast and /or dinner with 2 or 3 glasses of the Neera drink diet. Other people substitute all solid food with the Neera Drink for one day every week. While the weight loss results are not as dramatic as on the standard version, many people apparently reported good results. The Neera Master Program is recommended for people who liked the Neera Super Cleanse program so much that they want to make it a part of their lives. The master program is done by going on the 10 of 15 day program followed by either the “Relaxed Version” or the “One Day a Week” cleanse. The 10 day program is then repeated every three months.

Will you lose weight on the Neera Super Cleanse Diet? For sure. But the reason is not detoxification, it is starvation. Nutritionists estimate that many Neera Dieters hardly manage to consume approximately 1000 calories while on the Neera Super Cleanse diet, of which a fraction of the calorie intake consist of protein. Most of the calories you take in come in the form of pure sugar from the Madal Bal Syrup, which will provide a source of instant and short lived energy, but it will wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels. You will in all possibility feel ravenously hungry very often while on the diet. The absolute minimum daily calorie intake recommended for losing weight is 1200 calories per day. Participants on this program are really losing water and lots of lean muscle mass, in the process slowing down their metabolism.

This diet can have disastrous consequences for your body. Aside from destroying lean muscle tissue, it is very likely to cause your body to go into starvation mode. When your body goes into starvation mode it triggers a self-preservation program designed to sustain the human body during extended periods of famine. While in starvation mode your body will try to preserve energy as much as possible by slowing down your metabolism even further. It will also grab any sources of energy it gets and store it as fat while using the absolute minimum to keep your body going. The end result is that once you stop this diet, you will gain back any weight you lost super fast. Not only that, you will probably gain back even more, because you now have a slower metabolism. Most mainstream doctors do not recommend detox diets, and often consider them unnecessary and even dangerous. Your body has been designed perfectly able to detoxify itself, provided that you follow a healthy diet with an abundance of water, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Many people use the Neera Super Cleanse diet as a kick start to their weight loss programs, and the popularity of the program is unquestionable. Reports of celebrities such as Beyonce Knowles that used this diet to lose weight for the movie “Dreamgirls” further contribute to the hype. When questioned later, Beyonce stated that she followed the lemon detox diet, as she had to lose a lot of weight in a very short time for movie, but she would not recommend it as a sustainable weight loss program. If you do decide to go ahead and try the Neera Super Cleanse diet, limit the number of days you spend on this diet, and switch back to a healthy lifestyle as soon as possible. If you feel unwell at any time, stop the diet immediately, and see your GP.

  • I’ve done this twice feel great on it, what impressed me mOst was the clean tongue no white gunk. I lost 16lbs did it for 10 days. your metabolism is shot after so I look at it more as a three month thing as I’m now feeling fit as a fiddle training with weights and cardio watching my diet. it’s taken me that long tO regain a normal metabOlic rate to say its shot forever is bull it’s suposed to change all the time! But yes if u don’t wanna to stuff yourself royally this is no quick fix. Fasting is age old and should be done as part of a long term health aid. If u just stop eating for 10 days and do nothing else you’ll feel like crap. After this fast you will need to train to raise your metabolism and regain muscle mass

  • I don’t like to admit this but I was sucked in and brought the product. I was on it for 4 days and I cannot believe how ill this stuff made me. I wish I had done my research on this detox diet before I purchased it. The senna tea gave me the worst cramps in my stomach and when you research this herb it has side effects that are not found on it’s packaging. I found from day 1 to 4 I felt progressively worse. Day 4 i felt like i had been drained of all my energy. The only way I believe is to achieve weight loss and maintain a healthy life is good eating and exercise!!! Anyone who is thinking about using this please do plenty of research.

  • Ok, let me tell you a few things from personal experience. I was on this diet for 45 (forty five) days, from april 1st to may 15th 2010. I lost 52 pounds (24 kg), of which only 15 pounds returned, few pounds because of emptiness of my stomach, and others because of chocolate, chips and other unhealthy food I’m still eating. Went from 40% to 26% body fat, while water level increased from 40 and something to 61%. Two days after finishing detox I went for blood test. Report was great, doctor’s words were just: now you can join French Foreign Legion :) I lost my high blood pressure and triglycerides, and I’m still feeling great. Neera is bad for your body? Yeah, pizza, chips, additives, aspartame and fluoride are not :)

  • Caloric restriction = weightloss?? who knew?!

The claim that this diet is a detox is complete broscience as it is biologicaly implausible.

oh well, stupid people deserve to buy stupid products.

  • I find the author of this “hit-piece” hard to believe. You mean to tell me that a 10-15 day diet will ruin your metabolism for life? Spare me. If you regain the weight afterwards it’s because you’ve failed to modify your eating habits and therefore you deserve to regain it.

  • I am really tempted to try this. After three years of being bulimic off and on, I stopped for two years now and I’ve gained a lot of weight back. I started excercising and eating healthy, I’ve notice my legs getting a bit slimer, stomach flatter and arms tighter, but tonight my friend tells me about this neera diet and I’m so tempted to purchase it. I don’t know. After reading these reviews, I am a bit scared of what it will do to my body because I know being bulimic did enough damage. So, I think I should stick to my excercise and diet because I want it to be a lifestyle, not a one time thing.

  • Agree 100%. I am a registered dietitian and I find it amazing how many of my clients actually went on these detox diets and then can’t understand how they got to be so overweight. But a few hours of surfing the internet later I know why. The marketing for all these detox products, e.g. the Lemon Detox Diet or the 48hr Rapid Detox Diet is just phenomenal. Not to talk about the TV adverts! Should be more websites like this one that provide useful and helpful information.

  • The diet is a complete scam. Extend use of the diet may stop the weight coming back for a while. But that is only because you’ve stopped eating for so long your stomach shrinks and your slowed metabolism suppresses your appetite. However depending on the person you may be back to old habits and stacking the weight on in 2 months time again. As for myself by metabolism is now shot so I can only eat 1 meal a day. Sure I’m a bit thinner but I’m below the recommended daily food intake and I’m struggling to ensure I’m getting enough vitamins and minerals. Am currently trying to raise my metabolism so I can force myself to eat more even if I’m not hungry. After all I would be back to square one again. It is proving difficult with such low energy levels and I’m only 23.

  • Kim – been there done that. Do not even consider this as a kick-off to a healthy lifestyle. It will set you up with a slow metabolism which is quite the opposite of what you want to achieve. These diets may work when you are in your early 20′s as long as you keep on doing it, but you ejnd up with a metabolism so damaged in your late 20s that it will take you years to get back to where you were. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to stick to a healthy diet and to get moving. Lean muscle mass speeds up your metabolism and allow you to enjoy your healthy food and perform at your best. on these diets you will eat less and less just to maintain and end up overweight, unhappy and tired. Make the right choice now. Believe me, if I could do it all again, I would manage my weight very differently.

  • I have been on the lemon fast for 2 days now and I have already lost 4lbs. I have 3 more days to go. Once I complete the fast, I will continue to exercise and eat healthier. I have faith in the lemonade fast, atleast as a kick off to a healthier lifestyle!

  • Nice article. I think the marketers of this diet should be given a gold medal.
They have tricked a lot of people and have made a lot of money.
I have no doubt the diet works. And so does starvation.
Its just that it is unhealthy (and in some instances dangerous)
    and mis-leading in many respects.

  • Great article! Fad diets like the lemon diet are so popular because people are looking for quick easy ways to lose weight. Although you might lose the weight you’ll end up gaining it back plus more once you get off the diet. The healthiest way to lose weight might not always be the fastest or easiest way but in the long run it’ll be worth it.

  • Well I am at the beginning of day 5 and haven’t had one ill effect…no headache, no hunger, (kept wanting to pinch bits of food off the kids plates…but that’s just a habit) but generally feel ok…well actually, good…normal. …was up at 5:30 am for a gym session and pushed my usual weights no problem….unlike the marketing hype my skin is not any better or worse, and I do not yet feel spiritually uplifted (lol) but so far I have lost about 7 lbs…..

The body may be self regulating….but there is no doubt that we put stuff in our bodies these days that they just weren’t designed to process…..evolution doesn’t work as fast as man’s ability to experiment and manufacture new foods/ additives etc etc…..so I kinda like the idea od at least tryoing to get some of the gunk out…bit like chaniging the oil and giving a car a lube job…..boy the senna tea does that alright!! ;-0

  • To anyone reading this article. This is not just another view expressed that may or may not be true. I can tell you based on my own personal experience that this is true. I always had a relatively fast metabolism and used to be quite the athlete. I just hated that and was always envious of my skinny friends. I followed the lemon detox diet for 4 weeks, lost about 16 lbs (I didn’t have that much weight to lose in the first place). looking back at photo’s taken then, I was actually too thin then – very unattractive. Now 6 months later I regained the original 16 and another 10. I am just one big piece of flab. I am weak and always tired, and very sorry I ever went on this diet. But I am determined to rebuild my lost lean muscle mass and het my metabolism fixed again. My advice – steer clear of this horrible diet.

  • I don’t care who says what – it works! I needed to lose 10 pounds in two weeks to fit into a maid of honor dress for a wedding and I did it! I was hungry like hell and irritated, but it was all worth it in the end when I got compliments on the night of the wedding. That was 3 weeks ago and I haven’t gained back much. I think my stomach shrinked…

  • The Lemon Detox Diet is an absolute scam, and it really is a pity that people can not be protected against so many of these weight loss scams. This is one aspect of many people’s lives where they are absolutely desperate and willing to try just about anything to feel better, without thinking clearly about the long term implications. Thanks for the honest review – wish more weight loss web sites were so responsible with the information they share. These scams really benefit from other people’s misery. Let’s get the word out there! People – the only way to lose weight is the hard way – live a healthy life!

  • Well I can tell you – I wish I read this three weeks ago. You may lose weight on this detox but you really are harming yourself. I’ve been on the Neera Super Cleanse for 4 days, and had to bail out! I started to feel terribly tired by day 2, worse by day 3 (actually already a bit ill), and had such a migraine by day 4 that I simply could not continue with the diet. Maybe my system is just more sensitive than yours Jack, but there are definitely better ways to lose weight. Good luck.

  • I think is is just not fair judging a diet by the success of it’s creator. You’ll probably find that Burroughs got the diet from somewhere else when he started! I lost 10 pounds already in just two weeks! I take your point about loss of muscle mass though and will try to do some more exercise. Most successful weight loss program I’ve been on to date, and believe me, I’ve tried them all! Long live the Lemon Detox Diet!
