Weight Loss Products: FDA health warning against the use of Hydroxycut

On 1 May 2009 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the US public to immediately stop using fourteen Hydroxycut weight loss products; manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc. of Oakville, Ontario, and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, New York. Hydroxycut products are marketed as fat burners, energy enhancers and low carb diet aids. The FDA reports that over 9 million of these products were sold in 2008. These products were widely available in grocery stores, health food stores and pharmacies. The reason for this warning issued by the FDA is that some of the Hydroxycut products specifically have been associated with a number of serious liver injuries and one death.

Twenty three incidents of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes (an indicator of potential liver injury), to liver damage requiring liver transplant have been reported to the FDA. One of the incidents described to the FDA was the death of a 19 year old man due to liver failure, apparently directly related to the use of Hydroxycut products. Some of the other serious health problems reportedly brought on by the use of these products include seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

While these occurrences were rare, incidents of liver injury were reported even in cases where consumers were strictly adhering to the doses of Hydroxycut recommended on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice and brown urine. Jaundice patients also often notice a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. Other symptoms of liver injury include nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching, and loss of appetite.

Wondering Why Sleep Deprivation is Bad for You? Read This!

Author: Janet Martin

If there is one thing that a person is all too willing to sacrifice in order to finish the job, prolong the video game and TV time, or simply have fun with friends, that is going to be sleep. Many think that sleep is just a luxury that one can easily give up.

In reality, however, sleep is as important as food and shelter. You may be able to survive for years without watching television or playing videogames, but you cannot stay healthy and well if you skip sleep even for just a few days.

When you were in your teens, you probably think that the effects of lack of sleep were not that visible or serious. However, as you grow older and your sleep debt has become enormous, you will feel and experience the ill-effects of skipping sleep. Here are some of the consequences of lack of sleep to watch out for:

Not Good For Your Brain

You will notice that when you are unable to sleep properly for a while, you tend to be forgetful and easily distracted. In fact, many vehicular and mechanical accidents are due to lack of focus which is common in sleep-deprived individuals. Furthermore, your brain may not create new cells if you do not sleep well. Author: Kyley Zimmerman

Over the years, people have doubted the effectiveness of aromatherapy for weight loss. More recently, though, scientists have studied the relationship between weight loss and the sense of smell. And they’ve reached some interesting conclusions.

So… Can you use aromatherapy for weight loss? The short answer is “Yes”.

This is not to say that aromatherapy is a “magic bullet” or instant weight loss cure – there is no such thing. But aromatherapy can be a valuable part of a healthy, sensible weight loss program.

Aromatherapy does two things: It can help manage cravings and feelings of hunger, and it can also address some contributors to weight issues such as stress, anxiety and depression.

This combination of drugs was known as the E.C.A stack. Ephedra not only boosts the metabolism, it also increases body heat and as such can be regarded as a thermogenic drug. Review of the Perricone Diet

Dr Nicolas Perricone M.D. is probably best known for his guest appearances on television shows such as Oprah, CNN, the Today Show, and Larry King. He is a respected physician, a research scientist, and a trusted expert on health and beauty. In addition, he is also the author of three New York Times # 1 Best Sellers, “The Perricone Promise” (Warner Books 2004), “The Perricone Prescription” (HarperCollins 2002), as well as the New York Times best seller, “The Perricone Weight Loss Diet” (Random House 2005).

Perricone achieved tremendous success with his book “The Perricone Promise”, which really tapped into one of mankind’s most basic fears, that of getting old. Many customers reported that they looked and felt younger following Dr Perricone’s diet, and that it delivered an added bonus…they lost weight! Dr Perricone subsequently expanded his portfolio of programs with his anti-inflammatory weight loss program that promises to accelerate fat loss by increasing the metabolism and building and maintaining muscle mass, while at the same time making you look younger and live longer.

In his books he explains to his readers how to lose weight, rebuild muscle mass, while avoiding the haggard, aging, and drawn appearance that typically results from many of the other weight-loss programs. “Treat yourself well and the weight will come off,” he suggests. As an added bonus, Dr. Perricone’s program will help you sleep better; you will have more energy and less stress, and experience greater mental clarity. Lose the weight, the wrinkles, and the years! He goes on to promise dramatic results in as little as 14 days.

General tips on nutrition

1. Drink plenty of water. It is very important to drink 8-10 glasses of water every day, whether you are trying to lose weight or not. Water is required by all of the systems in your body to function correctly. If you are dehydrated, your body will try to protect you in all sorts of ways, including retaining as much water as it can. Without water, therefore, your body can also not get rid of the excess fat and toxins while you are trying to lose weight. There are many more reasons for developing a love for water, which we will discuss as a topic all by itself. For know, also keep in mind that your body often confuses hunger with thirst. By making sure that you are properly hydrated, you will be in a better position to control your food portions!

2. Try new types of water. Most people don’t like the idea of drinking 8-10 glasses of plain water each day. Try different types. Maybe you like sparkling waters better. Maybe club soda or even different flavoured waters to add some variety. Just be careful to check the energy contents of the drinks.

3. Be careful of white foods. In general, white foods are best avoided when you want to lose weight. This includes white bread, white rice, white pasta, white sugar and even white fruits. Rather find healthier substitutions that contain whole grains and lots of extra vitamins and minerals. Not only will it look more appetizing, but it will also taste better.

Hoodia Gordonii report

According to CBS (Correspondent Lesley Stahl – November 2004) people spend more than $40 billion each year on products designed to help them lose weight. Many of these products did not live up to expectations, but a lot of research is underway into solutions for this ever present problem. By all accounts Hoodia Gordonii may finally be the answer.

Hoodia is a natural substance that reduces your appetite. It functions differently from other appetite suppressants and diet stimulants such as Ephedra and Phenfen, that are now banned because of the dangerous side effects. Hoodia doesn’t stimulate at all. Scientists say it fools the brain by making you think you’re full, even if you’ve eaten very little.

Studies showed the diet of the South African bushmen (the San people), legendary for their ability to survive in a very barren environment with very little food available, naturally contains hoodia as a key ingredient since the beginning of human memory. The natural habitat of the bushmen is the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, which also happens to be the only place in the world where hoodia grows wild.

Nigel Crawhall, a linguist and interpreter, hired an experienced tracker named Toppies Kruiper, a local aboriginal Bushman, to help find hoodia. While Kruiper led the 60 Minutes crew out into the desert, Lesley Stahl asked him if he ate hoodia. “I really like to eat them when the new rains have come,” says Kruiper, speaking through the interpreter. “Then they’re really quite delicious.”

When the team located the plant, Kruiper cut off a piece that looked like a small spiky pickle, and proceeded to remove the sharp spines. In the interest of science, Stahl ate it. She described the taste as cucumber-like in texture, but not bad.”
