Jillian Michaels: Does your metabolism prevent you from losing weight?

Most of us have had occasion to cast an envious look towards the skinny body of a colleague or friend that seems to be able to eat just about anything without any visible consequences. “Great metabolism.” we say, as if we know exactly what we are talking about. Open a magazine, watch TV, and surf the internet and you are confronted with hundreds of products claiming to know the secret to boosting your metabolism. Scientists have made huge progress in understanding how the human body works to nourish and protect itself, but they still have a long way to go for full understanding of this thing we call a metabolism. Still, we can benefit a lot from what they know already, and that is exactly where Jillian Michaels’ latest book, “Master Your Metabolism”, comes in. She explains the latest scientific research about the human metabolism in lay terms that everyone can understand.

Many of you will know Jillian Michaels as the stunning personal trainer star of “The Biggest Loser”; the competitive weight-loss reality TV show that is seen by nearly 15 million viewers every week of the season. “What does Jillian Michaels know about endocrinology?” I have heard said. Well, based on the information contained in this book, a fair bit. Sometimes a lay person can offer a much better or simpler explanation of very technical concepts than a scientist can. Medical professionals often complicate matters endlessly, precisely because of their in-depth understanding of the subject matter. In their eagerness to ensure factual correctness, they find it almost impossible not to give us an information overload. What we really need is just the basic information on how the metabolism works, what it is affected by, and directions for how we can use this knowledge to get those bodies we always wanted.

Are You Eating Enough?

Author: Sonia Devine

In order to lose weight, we have to eat less of the wrong types of foods, watch our portion sizes and exercise more. That makes sense, right? There is no getting around the fact that if you want to shed kilos you must be expending more energy than you take in. But is there such a thing as going to extremes? In some cases, yes. Some people eat very little yet are still overweight and (understandably) very unhappy about it!

This is exactly what was happening with my client ‘Gina’, who initially came to me because she was struggling to cope with life. She had very low self esteem, and was often reduced to tears due to the high level of stress she was under. To top it all off, ‘Gina’ was also suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which caused her to experience severe and frequent panic attacks. Even though she was overweight, she was not in the right frame of mind to do anything about it at that point in time. We agreed to work on the more pressing issues first and address her weight later on.

As she progressed with the therapy, ‘Gina’ became emotionally much stronger and after some time, she decided it was time to lose weight. I asked ‘Gina’ to tell me about her current diet. As I listened and took notes, I was shocked to discover that despite being several kilos overweight, ‘Gina’ actually ate very little, and often skipped meals. She rarely ate until lunchtime; most days she would eat half a sandwich, sometimes a whole sandwich if she wasn’t feeling too anxious. Dinner was a handful of pasta and some kind of sauce. That was it! Continue reading ‘Are You Eating Enough?’

Top 10 Weight Loss Tips

1. Be realistic. Not meeting your own expectations is the fastest way to fail at weight loss. You should plan to lose no more than and average of 1-2 pounds or half a kilo to 1 kilo per week. Reaching realistic targets will give you a sense of achievement.

2. Never give up. The target weight loss per week you have set yourself is an average. in real life you may lose nothing for two weeks and the 2 or 3 pounds the next week! Present your weight loss to yourself in a graph, and just keep going. Do not be discouraged by periods where your body appears to not be reacting. It is just gearing itself up for the next big loss.

3. Get support. It is much easier to lose weight when you have a good support structure. Surround yourself with friends and family who will encourage you through the process. Be careful about telling those people who might be discouraging, either by not believing in you or by reminding you about your diet every time they see you eat.
